gear ratio front axle

trying to figure out if i have the 3.73 or the 4.10 axle on my truck. the axle code on the door says code 97. which i no means open 8.8 4.10 but when i did the axle bearing in the rear end last summer i had to buy the bearings for the 7.5 because i have 28 spline axle shafts. have a problem with the front axle. replaced the axle bearings in it and the vent tube. keeps blowing seals and losing the bearings. fluid is now milky so i want to just get a whole new front axle from a junk yard. im assuming that i have the 4.10 gear ratio but i dont no a whole lot about axle carriers . dont want to buy the wrong one. ive got to drive 2 hours one way to pick it up. if i have the smaller axle shafts and bearings does in mean i have the 3.73 gear ratio or does that have nothing to do with it?

There should be a tag on the rear end that specify the gear ratio. The bearing size has nothing to do with gear ratio. The fact that you had to buy 7.5 bearings means nothing either since 7.5s and 8.8s share the same axle bearings and seals.

If you do confirm you have 4.10 gear ration in the rear you would need 4.10s in the front also. These need to match.

Just to add, the reason for some of the confusion on bearings is that the Ranger 8.8" is different from say an Explorer 8.8" or other Ford 8.8" axles, it uses same bearings and seals as the 7.5".

Block front tires
Jack up both back tires
Put trans in neutral
Put mark on inside of tire and mark on drive shaft
Turn tire and count how many times drive shaft turns for 1 full rotation of tire
3.73 times or 4.10 times
Or visa versa
3.73 to 1
or
4.10 to 1

True I forgot to mention that the Ranger uses a 28 spline axle instead of the 31 spline found in Explorers for example.

the axle tag was rotten rusted to ****. just broke apart and couldnt read it. you did answer my question . thank you very much :)
oh and the parts store sold me the 8.8 31 spline axle shaft bearings. those were larger than the 28 spline axle shaft bearings. dont no why they sold them to me if they dont fit a ranger. so went back and got the right ones
thank you for your help

Not that it will come up again but just ask for Ranger bearings and seals, if they ask 7.5" or 8.8" just say "yes, that is correct", lol.
