Gear Size?
Since my stock gears are done for i am planing on putting the new ones in as soon as i can save a little money so probaly like 2 weeks. Im gona go with a 4.56 or a 4.88 not sure yet. I drive highway alot and not worried about gas tom much. With the 4.10s and 35s, 5th gear really sux there was no power i would almost always have my foot to the floor. I need the gears to be a little bit lower so if any one has any experiance with this it would really help alot.

i know jared is about to go with some 4.88s, im working up prices on richmond gear stuff this week. you would want to go wtih at LEAST 4.56, and IMO, if youre going to do it, you may as well go all the way to 4.88s, it wont be any worse than the stockers with 4.10s

Ya i was thinking about 4.88s to i dont think ill notice much difference with going from a 4.10 to a 4.56. I think ill notice a better difference with a 4.88 on the highway.

definately, with 35s the change to 4.56 is just not worth the cost in labor, go with 4.88s you wont regret it

4.56's are closer to stock Edge performance when paired with 35's though. If you have a manual transmission, then maybe you need 4.88's, but if you have an automatic the 4.56's are fine. That's what I'm running.
Despite what Bob said, I went from 4.10's to 4.56's and it WAS worth it, lol. If you intend to go with a full carrier locker, either 4.56's or 4.88's are a pain to put in if you don't pay attention to the center pin. It usually has to be ground to get in and out past the ring gear in order to get the axle shafts in. In fact, that will probably be an issue in the stock diff actually. If you are doing it yourself and haven't ever done it before, it's just one of the "gotcha" issues you can run across, lol. |
yeah when i installed my 5:13 they were a biotch had to grind the center pin for a real long time.

I have 35s/5 speed/4.88s and it definitely picks up well. 75 mph is about 3K rpm and 3600 rpm is around 100 mph...

With the ratio's in the automatic, I still think 4.88 is too much. More suited for a manual, or a non-highway truck.

Ya i have 5 speed and i am only putting gears in wright know its all i can afford. If i have open diff do i have to grind the center pin. I installed 4.56s about a year ago in my 91 ranger with a 7.5 rearend it was no problem to do.

with 4.88s and a 5 speed will i atleast be able to pass people on the highway without having to drop it to 4th to get speed up.

4:56's will do ya better a highway speeds. thats the set up im gonna run.

ya im runing 35s and soon 36s. I dont think the 456s are going to give me that much of a change from my stock 4.10s.

im gonna run 4.88s sooner or later. but if i dont go bigger on tires ill have 4.56s in with 33s.
im a little worried about mpg but with my 4.10s running 80mph going up hill the cruise stil thinks it needs to down shift so i cant see it useing anymore gas running a few rpms higher in 5th or having to down shift into 4th all the time. |
It sux becuse my foot is always on the floor on the highway in 5th gear so if i go up a little hill or have to pass someone i have to drop it to fourth so i dont care if im running a little higher rpm in 5th just as long as i have some kind of pick in 5th.

with 4.88s you'll be able to leave it in 5th most times, save for some hills. 4.56s aren't going to put you in the power in 5th gear as well as 4.88s are going to, and if you plan on 36s there is no reason not to go 4.88...

Oh definitely 4.88 if you're planning on bigger tires. I'm not planning bigger than 35's for this truck for a very long time most likely, if ever.
