Ok I have been thinking about maby putting this in my rear. It says it replaces the spider gears which are the bad parts in my axle.

I drive on road during the week and off road on the weekends. Will this be noisy when on road?


Another thing I need to know is what axles will fit under my truck with no modifications? I dont have the time,tools, or welding skills right now for the explorer 8.8 swap so I need a ranger axle but dont know if all years fit or if fx4s fit.


One more question, how much do you guys think it will cost if I was to buy the ford racing Traction-Lok and have it installed at a shop?

I think it is just bolt in.

Also any year 8.8 from a Ranger will fit in your Ranger.

 

that one is for a 7.5 rear you should have the 8.8 from the factory but i may be wroung

 

Another option, if you upgrade to an explorer or FX4 axle (which are 31 spline) is the Aussie Locker. They are inexpensive, simple and everyone loves them becuase they are pretty quiet. The Lockright is good too if you dont want to upgrade to a 31 spline axle.

From what i understand, it will make some noise while turning (a clicking noise) and if you give it power during the turn, it will lock up and cause the tire on the outside of the turn to rub a little. You have to keep your foot off the gas during turns to keep it from lockng as it senses toque which makes it lock. I am going to putting a locker in my truck, and am still debating on the Aussie or the eaton e locker. The e-locker is a pretty expensive, but seems to be the best bet for a truck that is used on the street because while off, it remains an open differential, and you select when you want it locked via a switch in the cab.

 

If your going to go with a Lunchbox Locker and your going to drive it on the road as a DD still, your best bet is probably the PowerTrax No-Slip. I've never heard of anyone complain about them.

From what I know they click a little bit, but nothing major compared to other Lunchbox lockers (like the Lock-Right that you linked).

2nd, if you have a 4x4, I'm pretty sure you already have the 8.8 under you truck. Check the axle code on your door jamb.

3rd, personally, I'd steer clear of the Ford Racing Traction-Lok. If just the spider gears are bad on your rig, then a Lunchbox will fix up your problems fine, and you actually get a locker instead of just a L/S. And if you do go with the Traction-Lok, your going to need to get your gears changed over to the new carrier, which from the sounds of it means your going to have to take it to a garage to do. Right there your probably looking at around $750 plus parts to install that baby. Diff work is really expensive around here unless you know someone.

A lunchbox I'm 90% anyone could do themselves as long as they are willing to think a little bit. Hardest part is getting the drum brake of the outside of the axle IMO. Haha...

Finally, as far as what axles fit, pretty much any 8.8 will fit under your truck. As far as I know the rear end of Rangers has been the same since at least the Gen 4 (98+) if not even the Gen 3 (93+).

I am considering the lock right more after reading this but, after searching more and asking people. I have been told that im better off getting a new axle and all because all the pieces of metal that have come off the spider gears may now get in the bearings if not already and kill them.

If I get another axle in good shape then ill stick with that for a wile and maby upgrade to a locker later, but any axle I get will have a factory ls in it.
