Is it just the hubs?
I have a 1994 ranger super cab 4.0L 4x4. With the wheels off, the axels spin when I engage the 4x4 when I put the wheels back on I don' t think the cam assembly is locking the hub. I spent a lot of time taking apart the hubs to see how they work. There was a lot of grease inside of the automatic hubs which I cleaned out but still no go. I just want my 4x4 to work! My question is how deep into the system could the failure be? Would manual locking hubs fix the problem?

okay I have an easy way to tell what part of your 4wd is not working.
with your truck parked on level ground, with your ebrake firmly attached. select 2wd. Crawl underneath and you should be able to spin your front drive shaft as well as the front axles. Now turn your 4wd on. crawl underneath. Your front driveshaft and axles should not be able to spin once the transfer case is engaged. If this is the case, then your transfer case is working fine which then leaves me to belive that your hubs are shot. I know it is very common for the auto locking hubs to go out. I would invest in a set of manual locking hubs. They will most certainly fix your problem.

It cost me about $300.00. I bought direct from a auto parts store; I've been online... I know I could have gotten it cheaper but, I was impatient. I tell you what though, I had fun today four-wheeling thru the fresh snow today! I also took the 2 bags of cement out of the back of my truck that I was using for wheel weight. Man I missed my 4X4! Glad its back!
