gears gears gears which to choose?

goin 35s soon. 3.0L engine. so i heard some guys like 4.56? i do alot of road driving but still love crawling up hills. so something that when im in 5th im not at like 3000 rpm doin 45 dont wanna be guzzling gas

Vonhanson 10-03-2011 09:31 PM

should be going with 4.88's

craigs2869 10-03-2011 09:37 PM

is that going to kill the gas mileage? and the rpm range is that gonna be higher than stock?

98liftedranger 10-03-2011 11:30 PM

Yeah 4.88's for highway.

legoms013 10-03-2011 11:39 PM

Lower RPMs does not mean better gas mileage. More RPM's is better than less, especially with the 3.0L.

4.88's BARE minimum for a 3.0L and 35's. I'd even go 5.13's, but if you are still going to do more highway than offroading, then you can get away with 4.88's.

4.56's won't cut it bro.

Yup 4.88s at least. 5.13 would be a good choice as well, but if you're 4x4 you can't get them.

KLC 10-04-2011 12:28 PM

If it isn't already clear, 4.88's. :)

Y2KTJ 10-04-2011 07:10 PM

7.5 or 8.8 rear ??? But yeah 4.88s minimum. 4.56 are more for 32's / 33's. That 3.0 is going to hate you. Not to mention the bearings.

Tys 4x4 FTW 10-04-2011 07:40 PM

x18 on 4.88's. I have em on my 4.0 w/35's and its amazing. for a ranger on 35's that is. haha

rangerrunner11 10-04-2011 08:28 PM

while youre looking for gears go ahead and look for a 4.0 or 5liter. that 3 wont survive very long lol

Why not? The motor will be fine if it is geared properly.

RazorsEDGE 10-05-2011 11:41 AM

It won't be fast, but it will be just fine.

craigs2869 10-06-2011 02:34 PM

yea i dream of a 4.0... however 4.88s may do it as long as i get the low end? my typicall off roading is very rutted terrain so its usually low speed crawling through holes. so maybe 5:13? guys runnin 4.88s hows your low end?

98liftedranger 10-07-2011 12:19 AM

Get a doubler if your going to be crawling. 4.88's and a doubler would be perfect.

Y2KTJ 10-07-2011 02:32 AM

Your engine will be fine with the 4.88 or the 5.13. I'd be more worried about the axles holding up than the motor.

I'm running 4.56 with 32's and @70mph my tach runs about 2800
I was running 4.88 with 35's on another project and @ 70 it was just a little lower but mileage was same with both.
