hey guy i was just wondering if i down geared from my 4.10s to 3.73s if i would notice a signifigant increase in gas milage? thanks

 

with 31's and a 4.0L I think that you might see some better gas mileage in city but the big difference would be the highway. You have enough power to where 3.73's would cruise at a better rpm level.

 

The SOHC 4.0L actually likes to cruise around 2800-3000 RPMs so going down to 3.73s will actually decrease your gas mileage unless the only driving you do is highway at around 85mph... your city mileage will really decrease with the 3.73s as it will take a lot more effort to to get the truck moving every time you have to stop.

 

so if i went with 4.56 gears i would see better fuel economy? i have the same size tires.

 

why would ford produce a motor that likes to cruise at such high rpms. thats insane

 

i get 13mpg with the 4.10s and 31's. i find it hard to believe that going to a higher gear will decrease my mpg, i dont care how long it takes to get the truck moving, my lifes not a race i just have to get to point A to point B and not go through 100$ in gas a week

 

If thats true, WHY did you get a 4.0? if thats how you feel, why didn't you get a 4 cyl or at least a 3.0? I dont understand why people with a gas drinking engine complain (im not saying your complaining, but you get what im saying) about how much gas is costing them, etc, and they have about the most inefficent engine as far as gas mileage goes...unless you have to have the big engine for towing or something. If you had a 4 cyl, you could double your distance on a tank, and cut your gas cost in half. You say your 4.0 gets 13mpg...my 4 cyl gets 22-23mpg easy.

 

i think you will increase in gas mileage. the 4.0 makes good low end torque so you dont need to run it at 3k all the time. i went from 3.73 to 4.10 on my 3.0 with 32's and it took me from 22mpg to 18mpg but its so much nicer to drive now. my dad has a 4.0 ohv with 3.08s and 30" tall tires and he gets 20+mpg

 

I've had 31's with both 3.73's and 4.10's now with my 3.0L it didn't like the 3.73's because the rpms weren't high enough. Now you have a 4.0L SOHC engine, you make like 60 more hp and like 60 torque. If my truck had that much extra power I'd be using the 3.73s instead.

 

Rather than re-gearing, you should check to see why you're getting such low mileage, as 13 mpg is really horrible & not normal. Check your tire pressures & air filter. Or maybe something else is wrong.

Check your odometer accuracy, especially if your tire sizes aren't stock. This can make a big difference. Your mileage might be better than you think. Mile markers are posted on all freeways. Re-calculate your mileage after you find how much error there is.

Most of all check your right foot. This can make the biggest difference in mileage of all. If your life's not a race, then drive like it!

 

you might wanna get that checked..im runnin 4.88 gears, on 37x14 tires with a 4.0 and getting the same thing as you are..something isnt right..
