Is this a good idea?
alright, I don't really do any off-roading, nor do I haul trailers, I haul lawn mowers and furniture some, but I was wandering if it would be okay to swap to 3:73 ratio to get better fuel economy, is there a reason I should keep the 4:10s? I was wandering if they put that gear in b/c I have an auto tranny, and removing it would cause issues...
thanks guys
thanks guys
Dont change the gears and just buy a tuner. I put bigger tires then stock and got a tuner and i'm getting almost 19 city and closer to 25hwy. If I was running stock tires i'd probably get another mile tor so each.

yeah dad was saying I would have to get it reprogrammed :-( I just with I had a 6speed, then when I was on the interstate I could shift into a 6th gear and get like 25-29mpg... I'm prolly gonna get one of those scan gauges so i can see live fuel economy readings...
It really depends on the type of driving you do.. if you do mainly highway.. then 3.73s would work for you.. hell, i think i still have my old 3.55s laying around somewhere.. but if you do a lot of city driving you'd be better off sticking with your 4.10s
my 2000 had 3.73's, on the highway it did good- but in the city it only had pep because it was a stick. I'd probably advise against it with the automatic. I agree with others, get a tuner, again since you have the auto and can take advantage of the 'tighter' shifts and what not.
with him having a 3.0 it would be WELL worth it. It wakes the truck up and improves MPG. I went from 15city to almost 19 and 19hwy to almost 25 with my tuner.
Yeah, why do you HAVE to get a tuner. I was going to swap to 4.10s from 3.73s this summer.
i recommended it because its A: simple to install B: will give you the same increase in millage that going from 4.10 to 3.73 as well as giving you more torque and power C: its fully reversible in 5 mins if you sell the truck so you can get something like 50% of your investment back
I don't have the 400 bucks for a tuner. I have a junkyard near me that I can get a whole axle, hub to hub for 40 some bucks. I figure I get a 4.10 8.8 rear and grab the front out of the same ranger and I'll be set. I don't care if the speedos off. Just flow with traffic and you'll be fine! Lol
