could there be damage?

Might be worth an alignment. When I was a kid one of the explorers we had hit a rock when were hunting and bent the rim. We just bought a new rim and went on our way, well it turned out the A-arm was bent slightly too and it started to wear the tire funny. Go to a Good alignment shop, not one that lets High school kids do alignments and get a lifetime alignment. I take my Caddy in once a year for kicks with my Lifetime alignment.

I don't think so. All it would have done is spin that side axle. I've seen both factory solid axle and factory IFS axles that do exactly what you did to serve as a front axle disconnect (i.e. disconnect only one side, which, with an open differential, prevents the rest of the front drive train from spinning).
