i have been haveing problems with third gear grinding and was wondering what everybody else is doing to fix it. it normally occurs while driveing normally and doesn't happen often. and is there a short throw shift kit for a 3.0 2001 2wd ranger manual

Alot of us have the 3rd gear grind. I haven't heard of any way to get rid of it, it went away slightly when I put new Amsoil ATF in the tranny. Yes there is a short shift kit, but I forget who makes it at the moment, someone will chime in.

every newer ranger i have been in/driven has done this... do like ryan suggested and switch to amsoil tranny fluid and it will get much better... maybe even go away like mine did

Well since I wasn't the only one that had that problem then it must have been a rash of bad synchro's. lol. I don't think my synchro's were going at 15k miles, I know how to drive a manual tranny.

It didn't happen every time, but enough to be annoying.

then your prolly trying to shift to fast.. when you try to shift really fast then you get sloppy and grind your gears :)

i've noticed that problem only a couplea times in my 01 only going into 3rd, and not trying to shift too fast. but i never noticed it on my old 98... it doesn't really happen enough for me to be concerned. whenever it happens i just assume i got lazy with the shifting, but it is weird that it's only ever happend shifting 2-3.

My 98 did it too. For some reason the syncros don't line up fast enough. If you throw the shifter slower it will all but go away. Take an extra half a second while your in the neutral position before you push it into 3rd.

Well I'm in the list too!!

Well mine is a 2001, B3000 and do the same at thrird.
I have notice it does it when I shift to fast, as yours is not all the time but
enough to make me preocupate.
Also does any body knows if its recomended an grease/oil change of this manual trannies, mine have 65,000 miles, what oil do you recomende?
And what grades?
Thanks

If you have 65K on the original oil, it needs to be changed. I do it every 30K or sooner.

You should only put Mercon (Mercon is a grade, not a brand) ATF in the transmission. Gear oil will damage it.
