Help Please 4.88 Gears lv2 readend?
I was digging through some old threads and I discovered one saying that 4.88 gears won't fit in a lv2 FX4 rearend. Is this true? I feel like a retard cause I got a lv2 rearend and 4.88 gears to put in it. I got the rearend for the beefyness and the torsen, but I'm thinking I need a new open carrier now. Any help would be great.

Yup. Gotta give up that torsen to use 4.88s.
|
Crap. So do I need a New open carrier then? Or can I just take the torsen out?
|
You'll have to get a new carrier. Its doesn't have to be open though. You can go with the trac lock limited slip or with a locker if you wanted.
|
Eh, the torsens seem to blow up anyway. Get an open diff and an aussie locker!
|
Ok. Thanks for the help guys. I really want a locker or limited slip. Maybe a powertax no slip, just looked at auburn though kinda cool. Need something roadworthy since its my DD. Would it be better to get a new carrier or just sell the axle and get a new one?

Get a new carrier, sell the torsen.
The Auburn ected is lame, don't buy it. It is a clutch based limited slip that will need rebuilt before long. It doesn't fully lock, it only "tightens up" the clutch pack with electromagnets. Honestly out of everything I have used so far, Aussie locker is my favorite. Plenty roadworthy, especially with an automatic. Much smoother than a detroit locker. Being a 31 spline rear axle, you could probably also get an Eaton E-locker. It is open when off, fully locked when switched on. I like mine so far but I haven't hardly used it except in ditches and gravel roads. lol. The biggest downside is the cost. |
Ok cool ill start looking for an open carrier. I look at the eaton. I don't want to spend too much, but I do a lot of winter driving. So it might be good to have a selectable. thanks for all your help.
|
definitely save up the money and get a selectable locker. ive got a lock right and ya its great off-road, but in some conditions i hate it. i wish i would have just gotten the e-locker

Lock-Right on a budget & E-Locker if you're a high roller!

Bah, you sissies whining about auto lockers in snow. lol
Honestly, at this point an automatic locker is my favorite in the snow. I prefer it over an open diff or limited slip. It is not unsafe and uncontrollable like some people like to imagine. Apply a certain amount of throttle (you'll learn exactly how much) and it locks. Let off, it unlocks. Plain, simple, reliable, you always know exactly what to expect from it. I don't care about a little over steering (who am I kidding I like it), but the constant predictability is what it is all about for me. A limited slip will sometimes spin both, sometimes not. An open diff is the same. |

Ya I do a lot of ice/ snow driving and I want perdictability. I don't like spinning around on the road going 50. Im ok with oversteer at slow speeds, Im just don't like it at highway speeds. Im think I'll be ok it I just put it in 4 though. So If I can't get an Eaton then get a No-Slip?

Thats what I was wondering, I have a spare front and rear 4.10 open diff right now, but may be picking up a level 2 rear end tomorrow, and ideally I want front and rear torsens and 4.56s to go with a set of 285-75s
if I remember right Jason had an RCD and a BL on 35s right wouldn't that mean he was on 4.88s? Wish ORR was still around so i could check. |
