Help with transt-box issue

I have a 1995 ranger with a 4.0 ohv and five speed box. electric shift t-case. The issue is when cruising along, at first was only on down hill grades, the trans seems to pop out of gear and a teriblble whinning noise.Sounds like something spinning way to fast. only way to stop it is put it in neutral and stop. at first i could drop a gear and give it some power but now it has to be stopped then start out in first etc. this is my wifes driver so i am pretty concerned it will leave her stranded. I think its syncros or shift forks but i am not familiar with theses little transmissions. I am a thirty year plus HD mechanic and have no issues with tearing into one but we cant afford to have this truck down so need to get parts before i rip it open ,get it fixed and back on the road. So any help would be appreciated. anyone now what would be needed to fix this. I would just grab another trans and swap it in but up in this part of the world they want an arm and a leg, your first born child and a dog for a questionable used one. so gotta fix it. thanks again for any help.

Welcome to the forum

You have an M5OD-R1 Mazda transmission, also called M5R1

Smaller version of the M5R2 used with V8s

Google: M5R1 rebuild

There are several build threads and some videos

Shop Manual here:

As for the popping out of gear and the noise, could be worn shift fork, but noise doesn't fit

These transmission didn't have alot of problems, most common occurrence, which was rare, was failed input shaft gear
