how hard is it to change trans fluid and tranfer case..
Ok so removing the fluid looks pretty strait foward. I looked up instructions here https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...read.php?t=397 and here for the tcase https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...read.php?t=396
What I dont get is where do you fill the transmission fluid? I feel like a dumb ass but I want to make sure I can do this before draining everything and not knowing how to fill up after.. lol also im guessing I only need a wratchet to get the pan off and thats it, no special tools.. |
There is another dipstick torwards the back of your engine on the passenger side for the transmission fluid. Basic hand tools should get you by on the pan.
|
Look on the side of your transmission. There should be a "drain" and a "fill" plug. If you need explaining past that, get someone else to do it  That's if you've got a manual transmission.
|
ya she be an automatic trans.. I know I have to remove the pan to drain it but I didnt see the fill plug when I checked underneat there.. but then again it covered in mud eveywhere, she could use a good cleaning underneat there.

On this 00 Explorer in auto class a transmission fluid change sucks. You drain it, then to refill I believe we had to fill from underneath. Or maybe I'm thinkin of some other part. It's been a while since I was in HS, heh..

Recent Rangers are: AT: Mercon V ATF MT: Mercon ATF Transfer case: Mercon ATF Earlier models: AT: Mercon ATF MT: Mercon ATF Transfer case: Mercon ATF I don't know what a 92 takes for sure. Years ago, the manual transmissions specified gear oil instead of ATF. If you don't have a 92 owners manual, it would be good to get one from somewhere like eBay. |
I might just crawl under there and do it myself, now. I didn't want to spend 130 getting done at a shop. Thanks guys!
|
Looked it up, didnt think that the maual would have it. Mitsubishi-80w gear lube, Mazda Mercon ATF.
|
Call me an idiot but the transfer case is a 4wd thing right?

So for the AT you just unbolt the pan, let it drain, put the pan back on and refill it??
|
amsoil has instructions on there website for a tranny flush
u may want to change the filter also, and you will prolly need a new gasket for the pan for me... 130 for everything > or me dicking around for 2-3 hours doing it. |
So did you get it done or do it yourself??
|
I didnt do it myself, I brought it in to have it drained as when you unbolt the pan it doesnt take everything out and I wasnt quite sure how to do it.. but basically they tapped in my trans coolant line and I ran the engine to pump it out.. or something like that. The transfer case was easy, I did that one and my rear differential myself. Now the front differential im gonna take it in to the shop as well cause they have to pump it out.
|
i had a shop do the front diff and tranny, i change all the rest.
