Hurst Shifter on an '05
 

Ive been looking into getting a hurst for my '05 XLT but the one Hurst shifter that is offered is only good up to an '03. Was there a change in the transmissions from 03 to 05, or will this shifter work on my truck?

it will work, but they are known to leak...

Mine doesnt leak, just make sure to use the spacer if it is called for. I say go for it.

I have a 2004 and it fit's fine.

i havent heard of it leaking more of the annoying rattle it makes...

Loctite is the answer! Just make sure to use the higher strength version.

Mine leaked. Badly. My rubber floor is ruined. (I've had a replacement in the closet for months.. too lazy to take the seats out.. covered the rippled-up pass. side floor with mats.) Hurst did send me a new gasket, but it failed too. I have about a metric ton of Hi-Temp RTV keeping it from leaking now. (Either that or it all leaked out and I'm running my tranny dry.. I probably should check.)

I wish someone else would make a short shifter for the Ranger, because as much as I love the feel of it, the Hurst hasn't been worth the hassle.

Dang Brian, you were always one to speak well of the Hurst. I guess in time, the heat will make those thin gaskets leak. That was my biggest concern, and one of the top reasons I removed mine.

Well guys, thanks for the input. Leaking has been a general concern with almost everyone that has one. I don't think I want to risk ruining a brand new truck floor for that shifter. Still gonna spend some money on the truck somewhere, just not sure where yet.

Well, the first time, I actually had put the gasket in the wrong spot relative the spacer (the instructions weren't crystal clear, and being polish I didn't bother with common sense) so it was my fault it leaked the first time. When Hurst sent me a new gasket and it also failed from heat fatigue, I lost heart for promoting the product. I still have mine in the truck, because I can't bear to go back to long, spongy shifts, but I can't say I haven't been somewhat disappointed.

The instructions leave a lot to be desired, and I told their product folks about it. The whole "spacer" section could be much better.

I think the Ranger's tranny design also doesn't help. We don't have a seperate turret or turret oil, so there is a ton of heat and fluid going up into the Hurst shift cup. The OEM system is capped, so there is much less chance of leaking. I never had a chance to put a temp meter on mine, but the shift cup was generating some serious heat. In my opinion, a good design would use a billet cup with groved high temp gaskets. For the $200 cost, Hurst could afford to redesign their system.

Hurst shifter leaks and rattles, stock shifter just fine.............IMO I like my stocker. Don't get me wrong, the Hurst shifter looks cool, but I'd rather spend my money on a FX4 shifter that's not going to leak and rattle. Gear mesh noise my ass.....my stocker doesn't make a sound, and that's the way I like it.

If you follow the directions (they arent the best directions but the company stands by their product- just call em if you have a problem or question, hell they sent me free stop screws because mine vibrated out) and use the spacer (or not) when called for, and it will NOT leak. Also if you use loctite on the bolts holding the shift lever to the rest of the shifter, it will not rattle. All you will hear is gear noise with this shifter- I know, i've had all the wierd noises from the shifter and that's on account of loose bolts for the shifter lever. IMO good investment if you dont like the sloppy stock shifter and want to get in some quicker shifts every now and then..but heh its personal preference, after all it is a ranger and not a 'stang :laughing:
