I need new catalytic converters

I've had my Ranger in the shop because I thought I was having transmission problems. Turns out my catalytic converters are clogged up. The shop wants almost a grand to replace them with factory replacements. Can someone recommend an aftermarket y pipe with cats that will improve performance for around the same price or lower price? I checked summit racing but didn't come up with anything. I don't want whatever I install to trigger a check engine light. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I also have a '98 mustang gt. I eliminated the cats on it but installed what was called MIL eliminators which prevented a check engine light. Would the same thing work on my Ranger? Also, I am out of state right now and don't have my ranger with me. Can someone tell me what's under my truck as far as how many cats on each side and are they all cats or are some of them what they call "pre-heaters"? Can I get away with only installing 1 aftermarket high flow cat on each side without triggering a check engine light?

Yes, it is a federal offense. Nobody cares though....it doesn't stop people from doing it. Especially if the person lives in an area without emissions testing.....

Not necessarily... I've seen too many people being robbed by garages for parts that can be fixed by an alternative method. Maybe he just didn't think of it? Anyways... LMC Truck has cats for about $300 for the part. (Lmctruck.com) Then just take em to a garage and have them installed, or DIY.

Thanks everyone. Because I am out of state, don't have my ranger with me, and would like to have the parts waiting for me when I get home, does anyone know what size the exhaust pipe is where the cats are? Yes I would like to keep it as earth friendly as possible while still improving performance. Also, I really don't want a constant engine light. I have found high flow cats by flowmaster but not sure what diameter/dimensions I need since I can't crawl under my truck and look right now. Also, I have found a set of headers on Summit Racing. They're Pacesetter Performance part #70-1387. They have a 2.5 inch collector and are available with or without EGR. My question about this (again I can't look at my truck right now) is do I have EGR? And is the stock exhaust size 2.5 inch or smaller than that?

Oh, and also the cats that I've found by Flowmaster are available with or without air tubes. Do I need it with air tubes?
Thanks again!

I've heard that they're 2.5 before the cat, and 2.25 post cats.

Anyone got a picture of the underside of their ranger showing the y-pipe? Flowmaster offers several variances of cats, not sure what I will need to do one on each side.

Amazon has the bottom one for $179.65

Anyone have any ideas what may have been the cause of my cats becoming clogged up?

The bottom cat is the one you'll need.

My Ranger has 70,000 miles. I bought it used and have put about 10,000 of those miles on it. It has needed new oxygen sensors since before I bought it. I just installed all new oxygen sensors but this was at the same time I found out the cats were clogged up. Since I bought the truck I've changed every fluid except for the front differential and I've put new tires on it. I have used Sea Foam in the gas and in the crankcase. Other than that, I've replaced the serpentine belt, the belt tensioner, and the battery. I had the original alternator rebuilt. Also installed a new fuel filter at the same time I did the oxygen sensors. I've purchased a used Eaton M90 off of a '92 Thunderbird SC and also a cold air intake but haven't installed either of those things yet. The truck is currently bone stock.

Anyone out there know how difficult it is to put shorty headers on the 4.0? Any threads about this? The headers pictured above are only $183.95 at Summit Racing. I just ordered two Flowmaster cats from CarID. FLOWMASTERŽ - 284 Series Stainless Steel ODBII Oval Catalytic Converters (2.50" Inlet / 2.50" Outlet). Paid $173.12 each for them.

I'm following this thread also as I'm thinking of putting headers on my 03 level 2 4x4 with 4.0.
