i just boutgh a 93 ranger 5 speed 4x4. i went and tested the 4x4 and its making a weird clunking sound (up front). so what i need help with is knowing what to look for so i can try to fix it. it has manual locking hubs. i think i can fix it but i just dont know what to look for. if you can help i would really appretiate it. thanks for your time.

 

My 01 is doing this too....I think it's my front diff (found out previous owner ran it with no diff fluid....check ur fluids....if it's empty you will confirm both of our diagnosis!

It could also be something as simple as U-joints.

 

put your truck up in the air, then engage 4x4 and see how many wheels spin. start from there.
you can't really diagnose something without it working.

 

Mine sometimes locks up while in reverse. Then makes a thhumping sound. Sometimes the sound goes away....usually it doesn't anymore....I removed the front driveshaft and it still has the thumping coming from the front drivers side
