I have a 2005 Range Edge 4x4 with a 4.0 (E 8th Digit Vin), and I am having a hard time finding and engine that is compatible with the year model. The vehicle is stock and was my son's. He did not maintain the vehicle, like most teenagers, and I have been told by a trusted mech that the engine needs to be replaced. I have spent several days trying to find a used or reman engine for it but this year seems to be especially hard to find on-line.


If anyone and point me in the right direction I would be grateful.


The vin on the vehicle is 1FTZR45E65PA09602.

 

Regardless of what you might read, any 1997 4.0l SOHC to 2011 4.0l SOHC will work.
Truck engine would have different cams than car engine, trucks get more torque and less HP, cars are opposite, but engine would still work.

Some of the Ranger 4.0l SOHC 4x4s had balancer shafts, some didn't so not really an issue, no 2WD had balancer shafts.
They added this because front drive line on 2001 and up Rangers was always spinning, "Live Axle", turned out it wasn't needed.

1997 to 2003 4.0l SOHC has bad design on timing chain system, so need to be replaced with new design, this is a parts fix, nothing to do with the engine itself.

You are basically doing a long block swap, so you will be using your upper and lower intake, and oil pan, also all the accessories from current engine, i.e. alternator, P/S, A/C, ect.....
And flywheel or flexplate which ever you have, so "new" engine can be from manual or auto, doesn't matter.
Ford did change exhaust manifold around in 2001 but you probably wouldn't go older than that.

Change the Knock sensor and rear main seal before installing "new" engine.

 

Thank you for the quick response. That should make finding a replacement engine a lot easier, since a lot of the yards here have 4.0 from 2004 and up explorers and sport tracks.
