Blew my transmission

Today i was messin around and bang, reverse doesnt work and just grinds. Clunking and grinding noises in 1st gear but it rolls. I got it taken to my buddy's shop, Offroad Unlimited, for 30 bucks and they are doin a diagnostic for 20 bucks. Anyways im almost sure I blew the main shaft in my tranny.

Correct me if im wrong, but my axle is an M50d-R1? Would I be able to replace it with an M50d-R1HD? Or could I get it rebuilt with the HD parts?

Could have blown your reverse or forward sprag clutches. Reverse most likely. If you were going between forward and reverse quickly it can happen.

Other possibilities too, but if the rear sprag grenades it's a grinder for sure and reverse will be history.

The M50D-R1HD was only offered in the 4.0 SOHC. You MUST use use a M50D-R1 from a 3.0.

The M50D-R1HD will not work on a 3.0 because the 3.0 and 4.0 have different bell housings. You can swap in the internals from the R1HD to the R1, but the cases are different because of the different bell housings. The automatics are the only newer Ford transmissions that have a removeable bell housings. The older Ford RBV manuals had a removealbe bell housing (FM-132, FM-145, FM-146, Toyo Kogo, etc.).
