L/S wear question

So I know this depends heavily on the driving style on the user but when do LSDs usually start to wear? ie, when do I need to rebuild it?

Kris03 01-26-2012 03:54 PM

i thought i read somewhere like 70,000 miles? dont quote me though

98liftedranger 01-26-2012 11:03 PM

When it breaks?

I never rebuilt mine and it had over 100,000 on it and it still running for the current owner with over 125,000 on it.

Mcleary316 01-27-2012 12:18 AM

Well no shit when it breaks but when the clutch disks start to wear the one wheel gets less and less power over time right?

Blhde 01-27-2012 05:42 AM

75-100k

You will feel it be less effective. If you wait to long they can go boom. Seen it twice where the clutch pack comes apart and locks up the rear.

05blackranger 01-27-2012 07:35 AM

Yeah 70k-100k sounds about right. I took mine out at about 105k and it was useless

Mcleary316 01-27-2012 02:09 PM

Well the rear end I bought has around 140k on it. The L/S feels like it still works fine though? Just driven easier then most or am I crazy?

OTRtech 01-27-2012 02:25 PM

You're not crazy . Mine has 158K and still works fine.
Just change the fluid every couple-three years , unless you're running non-stock oversize tires.

Blhde 01-27-2012 04:04 PM

If you are on the gas even a little bit in corners it will wear them pretty quick. Or if you see a lot of slippery weather and still mash the gas, that will wear it too.

Mcleary316 01-27-2012 07:41 PM

Ok well I have the the service manual and it says don't change the fluid unless it gets submerged because it's full synthetic. And as far as turns I have a stick so I'm shifting on a turn anyways so looks like im set.

Nope, it's very possible. Go with a gear driven limited slip if you ever replace it.

Must be a NY thing that they last long there. :slaphappy

Mcleary316 01-28-2012 11:16 PM

Is it a pain in the ass to rebuild them?

Blhde 01-29-2012 02:54 AM

Thanks Blhde. That actually looks easy... I just don't know how bad/if my LSD is bad since I have nothing to compare it too.

01RangerEdge 01-30-2012 11:50 PM

122K and all I've done is change fluid in mine.

1 more year and I won't have to worry about it anymore
