Life of a clutch?
 

I have a 2006 4.0 4x4 5 speed.....how long can I expect to keep the clutch? I tried searching the forums, but all I got was threads about clutch problems and after markets....So, any stats on clutch life? I don't BEAT the truck, but I don't exactly drive it like a grandpa. Any ideas?

I got about 50k out of the clutch disc....sure, i could have reused it, but why? trans had to come out anyway for the reason of the dropping......bad slave cyl. My experience with the manual rangers.....disc wear is least to worry about....other things mess up before the disc is bad.

It depends.... I had 3 clutches in my truck in 93,000 miles. The dealer told me the first time the slave went that the clutch was bad at 20,000 (BS). They replaced it under warranty and I got 50,000 out of the next slave and clutch. When the slave went again, I just replaced the clutch too. I would say Shane has it right at around 50,000 or so. Some on here will say they have the original at 100,000 miles, but that is rare....

185k on my truck and still on the same clutch plate.

^^highly doubt that i'm afraid. Unless 'clutch plate' means pressure plate...



Like i said earlier, generally, other components go first before the disc does. And changing out the bad component means dropping the trans, and since your dropping the trans, why not change the clutch for good measure? I think i said this right the second time round. lol.

I'm the 3rd owner of my truck...the guy I bought it from said he didn't have the clutch replaced, and said the original owner said he hadn't changed the clutch. I can only assume the clutch on my 98 2wd 2.5L is original...it's at about 136,800 miles. I'd also assume if all Ranger 5 speeds are created equal the clutch would probably wear out quicker on a 4.0 4wd compared to a 2.5 2wd.

I had my clutch replaced when I bought my truck and it had about 97,000 miles, the shop said it was most likely the original clutch since I bought it from a dealer and they didn't know

depends on the use. my 92 had 140k miles on it with the stock clutch. but that was a 2.3L

I think the newer ones have more issues.

I'm going on 80K, and the clutch disc is fine. Starting to worry about the slave cylinder though. Getting hard to get i8nto gear sometimes.

They say the M5 is a synchronized tranny.. I've ripped a few apart in my days.. Its not a very good tranny at all and why I dumped mine in favor of an older designed one.

If your having trouble getting it into gear it COULD be the slave but I would guess its the synchros time coming ' due '.

wow, syncros gone a 80K? Thats crap. The only real problem I have is 1st when stopped, and reverse. It feels kinda like I don't have the clutch all the way in, but it doesn't try to roll or anything. It started about when the maintenance interval (60K) was coming up, so I though maybe I just needed a better fluid than stock to help out the syncros, but that didn't help, so now I'm wondering about the slave. The action still feels fine, but I've never had a hydraulic clutch slave go out on me before, so I don't know what I'm looking for.

No problem...the more info I squeeze out of this, the better! It's tough to shift into 1st sometimes with my clutch fully on the floor.....I don't beat on my truck, I'm kinda getting mad at Ford's engineering lately.

I got 75K out of mine. No problem with the slave just changed it while the trans was out. My truck has a trailer brake controller so I assume the previous owner towed something big enough to have trailer brakes. I would say under normal conditions, no towing, driving correctly 100K maybe 150K. It all depends on your driving style and what you use the truck for.

I have about 107,000 on mine and the clutch is the original and is gonna have to be replaced soon.

On my first Ranger I got 200K on the clutch.
This second one I'm up to 118K.
It all depends on how you drive it and where.

City driving you'll toast it sooner than highway.
As a WORK truck , which most are not used as , you'll toast it faster than a DD grocery getter or to-work-and-home-again vehicle.

Not Ford, its the French whom designed the stock, whimpy trannies.

140-150,000 out of mine. It was slipping pretty bad at the end when I had a load on it or on a huge hill. But around town and any regular driving it was fine. All stock. We got the truck at like 80-90,000.

i have 86k on a 2003 ford ranger fx4 and im on the orignal clutch but its becoming of time to replace it all.

Well, I'm only asking because I tend to end up teaching a lot of people how to drive standard....my truck being the only means. i'm about to roll over 44k on my truck, so I was just checking into the typical life of a clutch. Thanks for the info, people!
