Locker damage report numero uno (number one for all you whiteys) with pics
first drivetrain damage from my newly installed front locker. Blown CV. Didnt know it was blown until a short trip on the highway which revealed a squirrely truck and once pulled over a smokng cv. I got lucky on this repair as I found a replacement and a delivery boy quick (my buddy just so happened to be going to the same town as me about 2 hours latter to me leaving!) I had to do the swap in the advanced auto parts parking lot (as you'll see). Ive only had my locker in for maybe a month BTW.

www.offroadrangers.com one of the people there "desertspive" had the same problem you did with the front locker breaking the cv's Rand |

It may have been a little of both but the locker put it over the edge im sure. Also i think that the strain from the lcker is concentrated in different areas for our two types. I know my locker hurts my cvs at low low pseeds IE: parking lots. Also i was hammering the frnt end on a rock shelf the day before. I was getting the spinning bounce and I was worried abut breaking it when I was wheeling so... |

Gil, are your t-bars maxed out? If so, that combined with a 33" tire will do it as well. The amount of downforce on the outer CV, combined with the wheeling you were doing and the locker probably all played roles in the failure of the outer. quite the contrary actually. my front end is really saggy rght now. I was thinkin about reindexing them soon because its so low. youre probably rght abuot the cmbination of the locker 33s and 37k miles. it was just time. but we'll see how long the next ones last and take it from there. |

you know, this was probably one of the quickest smoothest "repairs" ive ever had, too. even with the small amount of tools I bought and workin alone, total repair time including about 40 mnutes of waiting for a part was about 2 and a half hours. it just wrked out well this time! not to mention I could take the front end apart with my eyes closed anymore... |
It is the force exerted on the CV by the locker and the tire size....
While OffRoading my Jeep I have seen a lot of U joints blow due to too much skinny pedal when trying to get thru an obstacle.... Not sure if there is an upgrade in strength available for the CV joint, but in my Jeep I upgraded the U joints to a stronger design and installed full circle clips to support the U joint caps 360* so they wont flex and fatigue. CV joints by nature are not as strong as U joints.... OR 4x4 |
