Manual Trans Question

I have the manual in my '99. What manual transmissions will fit in my truck? Does it have to be one from a 2.5L or can it be one from a 3.0 or 4.0? I am needing a new one soon and I have found some good prices on rebuilt ones.

Another option is rebuilding mine. If I do which I have never done a trans before, what and where would be the best place to get a kit?

It's most likely the M5OD Mazda transmission like mine. What is wrong with yours?

robert99ranger 11-26-2009 04:32 PM

Ya, its the Mazda one. My clutch has 140,000 miles on it so its about time for a new one. Third gear grinds something terrible if you dont do it just perfect. First gear is starting to grind going in.

the m5od really isnt a bad trans....if the clutch is going thats gonna not help the grinding...but honestly...the grinding is probably just the Synchros in the trans I'd say do the clutch..and either have that manual rebuilt or throw a rebuilt one in probably cheaper to have yours rebuilt though

Ya I dont know what to do with it. I can handle the clutch probably but I am clueless on the guts of the transmission

The M5od tranny is pretty good if it is taken care of. Mine has 320,000 miles on it and I just had my transmission teacher tear it down and inspect it a couple months ago and everything was fine but the shifter. I would just try replacing the clutch and having the flywheel machined and see if that fixes the grinding before replacing the transmission. If mine has this many miles on it and the synchros and blockers are good, I would bet yours is fine too. It could also be the notorious slave cylinder going out and not fully disengaging the clutch.

1st is getting worse. I cant put it into first without coming to an almost complete stop. What are signs that the slave is going bad? It also feels like when I let the cluth out that there is like a slight delay before it takes off. Like something is slipping

The symptoms right before my slave went is everything you're describing. Wouldn't go into first unless I was stopped, ground going into 2nd and sometimes 3rd, felt like it would slip especially taking off from a stop.
The only thing I will suggest before you dig into replacing the slave, if your clutch is hydraulic like mine, bleed it once or twice and see what happens. If you've got a bubble in the system, it'll do the same thing. (Had that problem after replacing my first slave.)

could just be slave you can order a synco set and install them

The M5ODR1 bellhousing is one piece with the trans case. You can't use one from a 3.0 or 4.0 because the bell bolt patterns are different.

Alright. I'll try bleeding it and see what happens. I have a feeling it is going out. Where can I get a rebuild kit for the trans?
