manual transfer case

are all the bw1354 transfer cases from 1986 to current all compatible, like if i was gona put a manual transfer case on my 09 ranger would any of them from 1986 and up fit??because i see listings for like 86-93 and 04-07 and the ones 04-07 are 3 times the price as the ones listed 86-93 (probably just because they are newer)

Well you probably need a case between 93 and 97. Most earlier transfer cases will be the BW1350 instead of the 1354. The 1350 is not as strong and uses a slip yoke front output. There is no such thing as a manual 1354 after 2003. There is also no such thing as a manual 1354 between 98 and 2002. You will pay a big premium for a 2002 or 2003 manual case because they use the tulip style front output flange found on all 98 up 4x4 rangers, they are also very rare. A 93-97 case out of a Ranger or 91-94 case out of an explorer will be your best bet. If you choose the 90's style 1354 you'll need a front driveshaft from a 95 or 96 explorer, its the only front driveshaft that will bolt in with no modification. If you choose the 2002 or 2003 1354 then you'll be able to retain your stock front driveshaft. Whatever style case you choose though make sure you get the corresponding shift linkage as they are different between the cases.

BTW is your truck auto or manual? You'll run into another set of problems with the transmission extension housing if its a manual. You'll also probably have issues making your interior look stock with the manual transfer case shifter.

thanks allot for your info, you are a big help to me and lots of others on here, and yes it is an automatic, but it is currently a 2wd so i still have to get a new output shaft for the transmission, and an extension housing, but i do have a front diff and steering knuckles from an explorer for the front and now i know what i have to have for a transfer-case, and front drive shaft, what years would work for the extension housing?? like from a 95-96 explorer work as well?? because i know where there is a 96 explorer that would be good for parts, and i would need a transmission output shaft for a 5r55e correct??

You're correct about the output shaft. I don't think I can help you with the extension housing years. If you were a 5 speed I could, got all the years down pat on that one. With an auto tranny though, I'm just not sure. I think the 95-96 explorer ex-housing would work but don't hold me to it.

My 2001 Ranger is an auto and has the bolt bosses on the housing. Maybe his 09 does too??

You're probably right. I don't know about 09 but up till at least 04 all autos did have the bosses.

I found a manual transfer-case out of an explorer (pre 1993) at a real good deal, (probably a BW 1350), but it probably be worth putting in at a good deal, because it wouldn't be doing any real hard off roading, and when i find a 1354 i could always swap, or are they not even worth getting at a good deal?

91-94 explorers were the only years that came with a manual case and they should all be 1354s.

if you put in a 1350, you will run into the issues im having....had to get a rear drive shaft out of a 94 4 door explorer, and am having a 86 bronco II front driveshaft shortened by a machine shop.(checked a lot of different rangers, broncos and explorers and this was the closest that fit out of any year) I probably should have just bought a 1354 from the get go...live and learn

Alex98 11-29-2010 11:28 PM

make sure to get a 1994 case or newer as they have 6 planetary gears instead on the 93 version which only has 4. if it doesnt matter then cool but if your lookin for somethin a lil tougher go with that.
