Icon6 Shifting problems

Hello
I am new to this forum. Glad to be here.
My 1997 Ranger with an automatic transmission seems to have at least a couple of issues. My immediate concern is that when I try to shift the mechanism under the steering wheel seems to be falling apart. A star faced screw just fell to the floor mat when I was trying to get into gear. I see it will be hard to get it back in way under the dash around the steering wheel. Even if I could get it in it probably should align with something.
Yesterday afternoon it would not go into park and had a problem getting into reverse. I just got this truck a few months ago, and something the previous owner did left it in bad shape.
It also has some problems getting from first to second.
Anyone understand this problem? Ok to take the kid to school in this shape?
