mine use to do it every now and then

i would say go under your truck and check all the connections, and check all the connections behind the dash before u go spend money, and maybe just give it time.. something magical fixed mine

mine happened a few times, got me stuck accordingly, but just outa the blue the problem went away, knock on wood

I forgot to mention that when I turn the selector **** to engage 4x4 the light in the dash does not come on nor do I hear it trying to engage. Its like every thing is dead. That makes me think that it is an electrical problem like a bad connection or a fuse.

What do you think?

How do I tell if one of the bigger fuses is bad. I think its number 13?

well if its not connecting.. maybe a bad connection or a fuse still wont it?

it may be bad.. and is it a normal one? try a fuse of the same size/amp in the slot and see if it works

I have heard of vacum leaks causing 4x4 not to work. Is this a possibility.

Is there a manual t-case for the Ranger transmissions that would be a fairly easy replacement? One without a lot of custom fabrication?

the worst possible problem is it could be a bad GEM module....that runs $300 from Ford...

found my problem

I have been trying to track down my 4x4 problem also since replacing my front passenger axle and noticed the 4x4 was not working. After checking every fuse, connection under the hood and around the transfer case, and tapping the mentioned module with a hammer and still nothing. Finally I popped the trim around the radio to check the 4x4 switch and it was disconnected. I plugged it in and everything started working again. I will start a new post about the noise the the front diff is making now.
