Icon4 No 4x4!?!?!?!?

Alright well i just bot a 93 ford ranger 4x4 but the 4x4 isent working, the guy i bought the truck from says its because the front tires are 36's n the back tires are 35's, which i know is not good to have if you wanna use the 4x4 but will it stop the t-case from locking into 4x4??

Welcome btw.. But No it wont stop it from engaging but it will tear stuff up... Check the fluid in the transfer case, check the linkage to the case. Is yours the electric style that you turn the **** to engage. If so it could be the electric motor that engages it.

I hope the previous owner didn't put it in 4wd and drive with the mismatched tires for too long.

Try tapping the t-case shift motor with a hammer. Don't bash the hell out of it, just light taps. Have somebody in the cab engaging the 4wd while you're taping.

pull the motor off and find another, with every problem ive seen with the electric model its always the shift motor corroded past recognition. if there is some fluid left in the case, change it for new atf. but if you pull the motor off you can check the motor for conductivity and see if the motor is for sure the issue. but i doubt the case has an issue, its just the motor. sometimes the motors can go past its limit and become lost in its travel, so play with the one you have and see if you can actually knock it around or get the stator to spin, try some contact cleaner possibly, but its really not worth saving because it will just go again.

tryed tapping it, no change, o and i know the tires have to make a full rotation to lock up the hubs but will it not show the 4x4 light on the dash until the tires make a full rotation?

the lights should come on when the 4x4 is activated via the switch, if there is no light then there is no electrical connection someplace. i would assume its the motor.

once you get the 4x4 working, swap those auto hubs for manual ones. i can almost guarantee those auto ones don't work anymore anyways. they go bad after about 50k. one of fords not so great ideas.

i swapped mine on my 97, best thing ever. i don't have to travel a distance to have 4x4, its instant, on the spot, no matter what direction. i don't have to wait for them to disengage and then engage again when i change directions. i found out the old autos didn't work, and in NY the winters can be brutal, i needed 4wd.

DO NOT go out and buy new auto hubs. theyre more expensive than manuals, and don't last as long. just convert.

no problem. it is a fairly simple job. i had it done in about an hour with the right tools. the only thing i didn't have was an inch pound torque wrench. so i just used a 1/4 drive and estimated.
