noise coming from rear diff

Yeah this cant be good, i replaced my rear pinnion bearing and seal.... Now something when i put it into gear it makes a fairly loud clank, also when i start going from a stop it makes a fast ticking sound then it subsides. Any suggestions where to start? Thanks

i meant sometimes when i put it into gear not something.

lifted97ranger 05-14-2007 11:24 AM

when you put it in gear:shrug:.....sounds more like the transmission....

The fast ticking sound that i had in my last truck resulted in needing new spider gears. Not that yours is the same thing, but I wanted to throw it out there...

why am i seeing some dollar signs rolling through my head right now? So basically if i pull the cover and see some metal shavings new spider gears?

01rangerbigfoot 05-14-2007 11:35 AM

could it be something as simple as just greasing my u-joints?

no.....it could also be bearings, shims, or anything else that is metal inside the diff......

i still think you need to find out EXACTLY were the noise is coming from.....you said in your first post that it was when you put it in gear, that sounds like a tranny, not a rear end.....a rear end will only make noise when it is in motion...

greygooseranger 05-14-2007 11:37 AM

What year is the truck? U joints are usually sealed now a days...

all u-joints in Rangers were sealed, non-greasable......(at least back to '93 i know that for sure)

01rangerbigfoot 05-14-2007 11:46 AM

i have after market ones with grease fittings

01rangerbigfoot 05-14-2007 11:47 AM

so this ticking sound could actually be coming from my tranny where should i start?

01rangerbigfoot 05-14-2007 11:49 AM

by the way sorry its a 2001 ford ranger edge 4x4 if that helps

04 EDGE 05-14-2007 11:55 AM

did you do the repair or did a shop do it?

did you use a new crush washer when replacing the pinion bearing, was a new race used, was the flange torqued to the correct specs, i believe its 250ftlbs then there has to be a turning torque spec also.
probly ought to start looking for a new axle.

01rangerbigfoot 05-16-2007 11:07 AM

i did it all myself with proper torque, new crush sleeve and new race. Its possible it could be my u-joints i have a little play in the drive shaft. Hopefully thats all. I'll let you know thanks for the imput.
