notched cross pin 8.8, which one?
whats goin on guys, well im ordering my 4.56's either tonight or tomorrow from complete off-road, and they offer 2 notched pins for my front diff, ones a 3/4 notch and ones a 7/8 notch, which one should i get? they are both the same price? thanks
edit: it says the 3/4 is for the 28 spline and 7/8 is for 31 spline, now does anyone know which one the front diff has on my 02 f-150? |
notched cross pins = bad.
i had to grind a little bit off two of the teeth on my ring gear to get my solid cross pin in. Edit; now that i see your talking about a front differential, idk, it helps to read haha. |
Yeah, most people agree that notched pins are not strong enough, especially for use with a locker. They recommend grinding a small portion of the ring gear to let the pin pass through the carrier.
Grinding does not weaken the gear at all because the gears mesh in a patter near the center and not on the egde where you need to grind. |
I also ground a small portion of the teeth where they block the pin from entering the carrier, well I had the shop do it anyways. One reason was because I'd read the notched pin was weak, and the main reason was because I was having the Eaton e-locker put in and you can't use a notched pin with it.
This was on my rear 8.8, but I don't see why it would be any different for the front differential. |
yeah grind the teeth
|
On the front diff of my old truck, I didn't need to grind a little off the teeth or use a notched cross pin.....
I agree, grind some off the gear if you must |
Okay, follow up question: do the 8.8 31 spline rear lockers from other manufacturers use the same cross pin as the factory diff? I need to replace mine. I notched it and I'm regretting it as it is digging into the carrier.
|
k, i guess ill use my stock cross pins and just grind the gears... thanks for the input.

Super. I have a spare open carrier here. I'll try that pin. Thanks, Maurice.

Yes, I saw that: 7/8" for the 31 spline, 3/4" for the 28 spline. The one I have is a 31 spline.
|
< notched the ring gear. no problems, rather have a solid cross pin.
|
Just checked: same diameter but the ECTED's cross pin and the 8.8 carrier I have can't be exchanged. The anchor bolt is in a different place: it's towards the end of the Ford pin, and the center of the ECTED pin.

Back when I put this in, I was nervous about notching the gears, but now I wish I had, lol. Live and learn.
and this was a brand new ring gear, 4.56. |

Update on my thread hijack, lol: I just talked to Auburn and they're sending me a pin for free. Great customer service over there. If you call Auburn, hit "1" on the phone and talk to Nancy, and she'll consult with an engineer named Jamie or Jamey about it. Very helpful and agreed the documentation I received was wrong. It's a small crew for Automotive Products support over there, which tells me that they don't get too many calls to deal with probably. That's a good thing.
If the pin isn't enough to remedy it, I'll get back to them. |
glad you got it taken care of John.....customer service like that is worth paying the extra $$ for!
|
Well from past experience I found using the right pin works the best!
I'm just messin with you ****-Ass! P.S.- Why is C O O N blocked out? lol |
[sung to "I Was in the Right Place (But It Must Have Been the Wrong Time)"]
I know I used the right pin -- but it must have been the wrong grind. I put it in the right diff -- but it just didn't quite align. I know I did a good install -- but I should have ground the tooth off. I heard from Andy Roach now -- but you know he's just a ****-off... [oops...] |
lol
|
Really just kidding, Andy! That just came to me and I had to roll with it, lol.
