Pep-Boys simple trnas service...
 

hey i wanted to get your opinions on how good of a job pep boys does on simple trans services, like their new fluid, filter and pan gasket thing. i think its like 90 bux...

Since im goin on vacation in a couple days i wanted to get this done before i left, and its a little late to get any shops around here. I was wonderin if any of you guys would actually trust the work they do there and would recommend them?

you would be better off waiting than going to pep boys... i really dont like them very much

I dont know. My 1993 F150 was done at Pep boys a few years ago and when i left to go on vacation 3 days later my transmission went out. They said it was due to high mileage and not having done regular maintnance so im iffy with them. But if everything is up to date on your truck i dont see what it would hurt. I know now not to wait until 115,000 miles before servicing the transmission.

well how many miles should i wait before i get it checked, 95 ranger XLT 4.0???

dude i dont know anything about trannsmissions. All i know is they serviced mine and then a week later i dropped almost $1500 on a new tranny. IM not trying to feed you a horror story cuz i dont know alot about transmissions but thats what happened to me. Hopefully someone knowledgeable about transmissions will chime in and help you out.

You "should" have it changed out every 30,000 miles. I would give an extra 20 bucks and have the dealer flush it out personally (They charge $110 down here) I don't trust PepBoys. :cool:

heh i dunno who to trust, i do all my own work usually... student, low on money;)... but i dont take it to a dealer, i usually take it to a shop down my street but they wont have it done in time for wednesday so i was thinkin a pep-boys oil trans fuild change and filter wouldnt be a bad idea, now im not sure

How many miles do you have on the current fluid? Is it an auto or stick?

BTW...a signature would be great...stick all the specs of your truck in there...makes answering questions a lot easier...:cool:

i worked for pep boys a few years ago, in the store, not in the shop.. i would never take my truck there, lol.. i know too many idiots that work there.

im not sure i think the fluid has about 30,000 miles on it, and umm yea i'l make a signature in a min, i promise;)... hah i work at walmart, the meat dept. but i still hear all the horror stories i would never take my car there... umm forget to put the oil drain plug in, pour the oil in, drive it away and never look twice in the pit for all the oil... yea and another guy lost his wheel it fell off his car as he drove away, nice car tooo.. ruined his axle:(

Sig looks good. If the fluid in there has 30k miles on it since the last flush...you should be fine to flush it again. Look at the fluid, it should be red. If it is, you are fine.

I would take it to the dealer personally. :cool:

yea my fluid is red and it all looks good to me(doesnt smell burnt), i mean levels and all, i will do my oil tomorrow tho... think thats all i should do?..... ¿

i used to work at Butler Tire in Atlanta, Ga. From working there, i learned Pep-Bopys is pretty much the training area for any young guy that wants to work on cars. They will pretty much hire anyone willing to stand the heat. Stuff like Trans Serv., Tires, Oil changes, and other small things like that, it is usually done from someone inexperienced. Not always, but sometimes.

Anyways, just thought i would throw in my $0.02.

If you are going to be driving your truck while on vacation (To/From your vacation spot)...I would change the oil and tranny fluid. If I were going on vacation and letting my truck sit in the driveway while I was away...I wouldn't change out the oil. I would leave all the old oil in there and change it as soon as I got back so all the crap is nice and settled at the bottom. :cool:

Pep-boys will never touch my truck again. When I lived in MD I had them replace my clutch. It was our only vehicle and it was winter. They had it for a week. I bought a new slave cylinder and other things. They still couldn't get it to work. They finally realized they weren't bleeding it the way the manual said to. Plus there's a small plate that goes on the side of the tranny that they took off and never put back on, so now my bell housing has this hole left in it from them.

I am affraid to take any vehical to a non-dealership place for anything. My uncle took this beetle to pep-boys for "quick" oil change. 2 hours later they had the transmission torn a part.

I heard 50,000 should be your first major service.

I've been needing a good job during school.
