Are Rangers interchangeable with Explorers

Hey guys I was wondering if the 4.0L V-6 Ranger transmissions are interchangeable with the 4.0L V-6 Explorers? I'm looking for a new transmission for my Explorer and was wondering if I can use one out of a Ranger in the Explorer.

Thanks For The Help,

So if my Explorer is over head valve and the ranger is over head valve or Single over head cam they will interchange and work? Right? With out any interference with the computer?

Not necessarily. You should consult the Hollander Exchange manual. Junkyards have them but they might not be anxious to help you unless they think they'll make a sale.

OK after making a few phone calls to several people I have found that the 4.0L Ranger 4x4 transmission will mate up and work with a 4.0L Explorer 4x4 as long as they are both sohc or ohv.

Thanks for the help guys

Does any one know how to tell wither or not a Ford Ranger engine is sov or sohc? The only sticker is the one that says 4.0L EFI. I'm looking to take the transmission from a 99 4.0L 4x4 Ranger and put it in my 95 4.0L 4x4 explorer but i don't know how to tell the difference between sohc and ohv. Any help?

A 4.0 from a 99 ranger and a 95 explorer are both ohv motors.

4x4 manual transmissions might be a near interchange between a 95 4.0 Ex and a 99 4.0 Ranger. However, I believe that the shifter stub is different between the two years, requiring a matching shift lever. There could be other differences but that's all I know about.

The 95 Ex and 99 Ranger automatics are not a direct swap. If you want a plug and play automatic for your 95 Ex, look for a 4R55E from a 95/96 Explorer 4.0 or a 95/96 Ranger 4.0.

I don't believe that you've specified which type of transmission you have.

Yea the 97+ Explorer/ranger 4.0's both OHC and OHV had the 5R55E which has additional sensors so it will not function properly in your explorer. If you have a 5spd manual then you can use the manual tranny from 91+ OHV's and 97+ SOHC 4.0's the SOHC had a stronger manual transmission than the 91-96 Manuals and also have a little bit lower 1st gear.

Up date... I couldn't get the transmission out of the Ranger because the frame was bent causing the exhaust to hold it in the truck. :( So I'm searching again for another transmission that will work. I have a 1995 Explorer 4.0L V-6 4x4 with an automatic. I was just thinking could I get a 4x2 transmission and put the transfer case on it to make it 4x4 or are they two different kinds and I have to get a 4x4 transmission?

4x4 and 4x2 automatics typically use a different output shaft and extension housing. It is possible to convert one to the other but it requires full disassembly of the transmission.
