rare? 4x4 problems

i just bought another ranger its a 93 4x4 regular cab flareside. the 4x4 isnt working in forward only in reverse. so i did some researching online and everything i see says those years had the electric t-case. mine is a stick. bw-1354 i beleive. is ts a custom ordered deal or just normal. also if you guys could give me advice about the 4x4 not working. i was thinking that i should just clean the hubs and see what happens. and its got manual hubs on it too. they turn free and easy.

IIRC, there is a control box behind the drivers sear behind the plastic. They can go bad, there is a red light on it. I don't remember if its on is good or bad.
