It could possibly be the switch or wiring but the problem is usually in the shift motor.

You are sure it has nothing to do with your hubs? The PVS on our trucks are worthless, I would check that first. That would go first before anything else.

PVS is the Pulse Vaccuum System. When you engage your 4wd, the transfer case engages and also it activates a vaccuum pulse to the front hubs, which locks them. This system is known to fail, and in my opinion is not reliable. There is a way to keep those hubs constantly locked, like the current rangers are, so all that happens when you engage your 4wd is your transfer case engages and you are good to go. Let me dig up the how to and ill post the link. See if it work for you, if not we'll work from there.

EDIT:Yea I did jump ahead a bit, does your 4wd light come on when you engage it or no? If not, start with the fuses.

Try that. Let us know

I agree, make sure it isn't a PVH failure. You have to start your troubleshooting there with a '99. In cases of PVH failure, the transfer case and everything else works as it should - it's the hublocks out at the wheel ends that aren't engaging.

Often times a problem in the 4WD circuitry will cause the 4WD instrument panel lights to blink, are yours doing that?

Does the 4WD HIGH light come on when you switch into that mode?

AVM manual hub conversion kits are now available for PVH Rangers:
