rear axle help
 
im going to be changing me deferential fluid.. does the greese the whole axle or no? if it doesnt how do i greese the rear axle... is it like repacking the front bearings? also.. to the front of the truck.. where on the cv joints? do they need to be greesed also? if they are dry will they make a loud humming noise driving down the road? sorry i dont kno anything bout the axles/drivetrain if a ranger

The wheel bearings in the rear are lubricated by the gear oil in the differential. You only have to mess with them if you are replacing them completely. Replacing them involves removing the rear axle shafts, so it is only something you do if they need to be replaced.

I don't know about the front.

Brad you don't have front CV joints... You're 4x2 :wink: As for the loud humming noise... is it your tires? Can you describe it a little better?

Oops, I didn't notice that.

Bad wheel bearings in the front MIGHT be the cause of humming. If they have seen a lot of mud and have never been repacked, it would probably be a good idea to go ahead and replace them. They are not that expensive (expect to spend around $25 or so in parts including grease) and an hour or two repacking them.

o ok.. ya my front bearings have seen alot of mud and water.. i repacked them last week because they were bone dry for i dont kno how long.. but i may buy the new bearings just to make sure.. since they have seen alot of stuff.. i have been told my tires also.. but... A/T's hum that loud? err sumone has to be in the truck with me to hear it.. or maybe i can get a sound clip of it.. blah.. perhaps im to paroniod of the front of my truck
