Picked up my gears today, diff was in a couple weeks ago. Now I'm just waiting on Yukon to ship the install kit and it's off to my buddy's shop for the install. Should be running the 1st full week of January.

 

Is this for the Ranger or the Bronco, Chuck?

I've done gears 4 times now myself so I feel like an "old hand" at it, lol -- it terrified me the first time I did it but the axle is still running strong. If you can, hang out with your buddy and learn about it. Ford's are relatively easy in the 8.8 particularly as the shim packs for lash go between the races and the diff housing instead of under the pressed on bearing. The only one you sometimes have to press on and off is the pinion bearing if you don't get the pinion depth right.

Dana axles are a bit more of a pain.

I've got Yukons front and rear.

 

What gears did you get and did you get a locker?

 

John, this is for the Ranger, I don't know if you saw the pictures of the Torsen Diff that detonated back in November, but here it is again.





Ford won't take it under the recall because I have an auto, not a manual.

Lord of war, I got Yukon 4.11's since the stock 4.10's had 3 teeth knocked out of the ring when the diff blew up. I didn't go with a locker, no need for it at the moment, so I just picked up a Ford Traction-Loc rather than go with another Torsen.

John, my Bronco also took a dump in November, tranny blew out on it.

The same exact thing happened to me about a month ago!!! I too have an automatic tranny. I contacted Torsen about the LSD and the unit I have was recalled according to the serial #. There was a serial # scribed into the casing of the LSD. According to Torsen, the recalled units have "9700" at the beginning of the serial #. Also acoording to Torsen, Ford knew about this but Ford ONLY decided to recall manual transmission due to initial torque and did not think the automatic tranny would be a problem. Well guess what, this is becoming a problem and a safety issue. This is not right!

I am glad I found your post because I thought I was the only one. We need to do something about this. What have you done about this with Ford? I have contacted Ford customer service in Detroit and talked with supervisor to make a claim. I have also called the National Highway Transportation Safety Admin. and made a complaint. It would be great if more people who have had this problem contact NHTSA and make a complaint because the more this happens, NHTSA will force Ford to recall all Torsen LSDs that were recalled by the manufacturer. We can get reimbursed for this if they do a recall. This is definitely a safety issue because I almost caused an accident. Did you keep your old parts to ID the serial #? Hope all went well with the repair!

Truck is done, I pick it up in the morning, hopefully we don't have anymore issues with the drivetrain for a while... it's hurting my wallet a bit.

 

Man, that's bad 'cause when the rear end destroys and locks up the trk could go anywhere and it could kill people and the driver as well.

 

What model truck is this problem arising in?

 

The model truck this is occuring in is the 2002 Ford Ranger FX4 with automatic and manual transmissions installed with the Torsen LSD. Trosen recalled some LSD differential units in 2002 with serial # beginning with "9700". When Ford knew about this, they only decided to recall manual transmission trucks and NOT automatic transmission trucks due to intial torque on the differential unit. I have an official ermail from Torsen telling me this. So if you own a 2002 Ford Ranger FX4 with an automatic, check the serial # on your differential unit that is scribed on the caseing. If you have a serial # starting with "9700" it is a recalled unit and serial #s with 9701, 9702, 9703, etc. are considered OK. I do not know exactly hom many recalled units are out there but I would check if I owned this type of vehicle. I just started the process of fighting Ford on this because it is not safe to drive around with a defective part on your vehicle that could cause some serious consequences.
