A4LD rebuild

A4LD rebuild
I have 1992 ranger with a 3.0, 4 speed over drive transmission that I知 acquiring. The person who I知 acquiring it from says the transmission is gone (fluid is black, has to rev it up super high to get up to speed, once up to speed vehicle shakes like crazy.) I have a lift and am going to be rebuilding the A4LD transmission. I知 a mechanic at a dodge dealership and have experience going through Chrysler transmissions but no experience with older stuff or ford stuff, so I have a few questions to ask.
1: What are if any special tools I will absolutely need?
2: Would it be better to replace the valve body with a remand or buy a zip kit and rebuild?
3: in the service procedure I知 using it does not show how to remove the converter bolts, is it through the starter hole? Or is there a cover I can remove? How do you access the converter bolts?
Any help is appreciated, thank you all
