I had the same thing happen to my '05 Explorer XLT Sport about a month ago. At the time it had just under 58,000 on it. There were no indications that there was a transmission problem as it was shifting properly. One night, my wife and I were driving to the grocery store and out of the blue, a beep sounded and the check trans. message appeared and the o/d light kept blinking. When they ran the diagnostic, it showed a slip code. They drained the trans. to check for any metal in the fluid and trans. itself. What they found was clutch debris. They put in new fluid and a filter and we drove it home. They wanted us to bring it back when the warning came back on to see if something else came up, which it did it again the next day. What they found was when it said check trans and the o/d light flashed, the clutch was not disengaging. Needless to say it entailed a new torque converter and complete rebuild. To add insult to injury, after the repair on the explorer, I had a driveline problem in my truck. I was on my way to my Grandma's funeral in Dade City, FL in my truck on a Saturday evening. I made it between Columbus, GA and Albany, GA and developed a really bad vibration and a metallic squeal. I had to turn around drive back home just south of B'ham, AL praying it wouldn't come appart. Luckily, it was just the u-joints on the driveshaft and nothing else was damaged. Although, they told me that it almost ruined my driveshaft. It only cost $210 parts and labor but, it still hurt having just had the Explorer trans rebuilt. If I'd had the proper tools, I'd fixed it myself and saved some $$$. The part about it that sucked was the timing of it all.
