Removing axles

I know how to remove them that isn't the problem. What I wanted to know was if I could remove them without putting them back in and still drive the truck. Now when i did my ball joints on my pass. side I notice that it rides on its own spindle and If I took the axle out nothing would be affected except I wouldn't have 4x4. the hub and the wheel bearing and everything wouldn't have any problem. So I'm just going to ask before I do this (I have to put in new U joints and regear the front so I'd like to take it all out and do it and still be able to drive it) or would I mess something up?

Dirt could get into the differential very easy, also the gear lube would get out real easy.

I would think you could take the diff out and everything out without any problems. I don't think that would be too much of a problem.

Well thats good, I figured I could but I just wanted to see if anyone has done it before. I use my truck and taking axles and the diff out wouldn't be hard at all I just need to be able to drive it everyday. I need 4x4 before winter LOL.
