Found some 4.10 L/S axles!! Is it a good deal?
I've been to 6 different junkyards in the past 2 weeks looking for 4.10 L/S. And I finally found a set of 4.10 axles with the L/S. At first they told me $650 for just the the main part of the front axle, no CV shafts and the Rear axle. I got him to come down to $450 plus tax. The truck has 145,000 miles on it. Is this a good deal? They looked in good shape on the outside. There still on the truck and the wheels were still on them. This is the only damage to the truck:
Another question could I use my CV shafts on this axle?

Sounds like a ripoff if you ask me. Especially around there, not only is everything worn out but it is probably rusty as hell under there.
I sold my front diff with 4.10 gears and 30k miles to Shane for $150 or something like that.
I wouldn't pay much for a 145k mile rear axle either.
You can use the CV joints from that though as long as it also has auto hubs.

Its really hard to come by 4.10 L/S axles around here. I found 1 other set and they priced me $450 just for the rear and it wasn't L/S. The underneath of the truck was suprisingly clean. I took the gas tank skid off it, and it looked like new. the Drive Shaft was a little rusty but everything else looked pretty clean. I'm going to see if he'll take $450 out the door. I don't have auto hubs I have manual, does that make a difference? When you said I could use the CV shafts on that were you pertaining to my truck? Also Could I use the same spindles, Front/rear drive shafts and brakes and what not from my truck for these?

What I meant about the hubs was the hub/bearing unit itself, not the actual end hub. As long as it is not a late model 2000 with live axles, the CVs will work.
Everything on that truck is the same. Knuckles, ball joints, control arms, tie rod ends, steering rack. It's the same truck.
The 98-00 trucks didn't have a lot of 4.10 axles, you are right. But they are MUCH more common on the 01 and newer 4x4 trucks I think. It is still the same axle.
I don't know, the axles could be fine, it just seems like a ton of money for them. My 98 ranger had 145k miles and the axles were fine, but I wouldn't have tried to sell them for that much either. You should be able to make a few bucks selling the axles off your truck afterward, but probably not a lot.

Ya, I'm just thinking I bought mine with 145,000 miles on my axles and no complaints. So there shouldn't be any difference in buying these, unless if they were abused by some teenager. I would really like to check carfax on it just to see if it had any problems with the axles. But it is a 2000 built in march of 2000, So the CVs will work? I'm hoping to get $200 out of mine so that will bring it down to $250 which isn't bad at all. Thanks for the help/info Brian. anybody else?

Its got power options. I don't know what engine it has I didn't look. Do I need to know? I thought about it but I like my flag style mirrors.

Looks like it took some front end damage, who knows what shape the CV's are in. As well, and accident like that would put alot of stress on the front diff.
If it was me, 450 sounds like I am getting bent over. Why not look for an 01+ if you want 4.10's? You should still be able to use the fornt diff as long as you retain your front CV's

Is the front axle on a 4.10 open diff the same as a front axle L/S cause I could always get the 4.10 L/S rear out of the red 2000 and get the 4.10 open front out of the 01 Can I do that? So that front end damage could have put stress on the gears?

The 01 model has a live axle setup in the front axle also, so I think you would lose your maual hubs.
Other than that, as long as it's the same gear ratio It will work.

I want to make sure I got this right, it was made in march of 2000 and its a 2000 ford ranger so would it have live axles?
And if I get a live axle whats the difference b/w what I have and a live axle? would I just use the hubs from the truck i get the live axle from.
Thanks for all the help guys. I just want to make sure I make the right choice.

EARLY 2000 Rangers still had the pulse vacuum hubs. 2000.5 and up converted to like axels.

You cant just use your existing hubs on a live axel. I am pretty sure the outer CV's are different to accept a Vacuum hub. Why not keep your CV's now and just use the new pumpkin? This way you arent going to have to get neew wheel bearings.
