My son has a problem with my old Ranger 95 4.0 auto. when it's shifting from 2nd to 3rd the engine races to 3K-4K and then shifts hard. He's not got access to computer now so I'm looking for guidance in what to look for

Sounds like the tranny is on the way out. Try getting it flushed.

 

check the fluid first and try changing it.

 

sounds like the normal 2-3 flare......

try searching on here for the 2-3 flare fix.......or PM John Griggs (n3elz) about fixing it, he has done it and did a write up on it somewhere.....
