School me on the 8.8

I'm the kind of person that likes to think I know everything lol. But I just couldn't recall the answer to this one. I know I've seen it somewhere before but I just couldn't remember where.

Anyways I'm clocking the shock tabs on my rear axle and I need to know if the axle tubes are cast or if they're steel. I don't want to rush welding them in place only to find out the tubes needed to be pre-heated before welding. I just flat haven't had the time to actually find out for myself either so help me out a bit, I know some of the axle gurus will know this one.
