Serial number on a 2002 auto tranny?

I've been crawling around trying to find a serial number on the transmission housing, but without luck. I guess the first question is: does the tranny have a serial number? If so, where? I'm not as limber as I was as a youngster, and I could use the help. My truck is a 2002 3.0 automatic.

Thanks,

Bill

Welcome to the forum

Should be a metal tag on tail shaft bolt, but not always

2002 3.0l Ranger will have a 5R44E 5-speed automatic

2001 and up 3.0l had that transmission

Base model(grandfather) was the A4LD 4-speed, it had 2 solenoids and was used thru 1994
In 1995 Rangers got the 4R44E, 4-speed, it had 6 solenoids
In 2001 Ranger got 5R44E 5-speed, but still 6 solenoids, Ford added software to turn overdrive on when still in 1st gear, adding a "5th gear" shift, very clever

4R55E and 5R55E have a bigger OD drum, only used on the 4.0l engines

If it you look up info for the 5R44E you will get 4R44E, 55E and A4LD info as well, lol, they are all basically the same transmission as far as parts, there are differences, just not alot

Thanks for the welcome.
I'm actually trying to figure out if there is a serial number on the transmission. I'm trying to verify that a replacement tranny was or wasn't installed. Is there a unique number/serial number on the transmission? If the tranny is original to the truck, are there numbers on it that track the VIN for the vehicle?

Thanks,
Bill

VIN doesn't include transmission info, not even if its a manual or automatic

The Vehicles Serial Number at the end of the VIN, 12th position, would have that info if you could accurately decode it, but not the engines or transmissions serial number
It would be somewhere in Fords data base, but getting it would be the hard part, I would try Ford Dealer first, but longshot
And 15 years is Fords magic number now, it only keeps data available for 15 years from data of manufacture
