shallow or deep pan transmission?

Went to get an auto transmission filter and gasket and was asked this. I have no idea how to tell what I have. Any ideas?

4x2 is the shallow pan, 4x4 is the deep pan.

Theres a deep sump pan for the A4LD that will fit. It really depends on if you can get a 4wd pan for cheap. however the flat bottom pan will be easier to do a trans swap later down the road.

http://www.partshp.com/Pans.htm scroll down abit

Adds 3 quarts uses 4wd filter.

thats the answer I needed! I got up way to late to make it to the junkyards AND get the filter/fluid changed. So I still have not done it. Should be the next few days or so.

thanks again 04!

OLD thread but got me thinking... is there a benefit to swapping out the trans pan for the deeper one? I'm almost due for a trans fluid change and figured replace my 2wd pan since it's looking a little rough for the 4x4 pan.. it's cheap at around $45.

The 4x4 pan only holds about half a quart more fluid so not a huge benefit but more fluid means slightly cooler temps and the ability to swap more overall fluid during a filter change. If you're getting a pan anyway, might as well do the 4x4 pan but I wouldn't go out of the way to change it.

Thanks for the info! Welp in that case I think you're right in terms of not going out of my way. For some reason I read someone stating it holds more than 3qts more of fluid... but for half a qt it really isn't worth it to me.

Appreciate the info!

The pan that holds 3 extra quarts is an aftermarket aluminum pan. They cost around 250 bucks.
