1993 Auto Transmission on 3.0

Daughters first vehicle. After owning for one year the front transmission seal began to leak so I removed the transmission and replaced the seal. Now, there is a delay when shifting from park to reverse or drive and also a slight jerk when it engages. Also, the transmission does not shift gears until getting to very high rpm's and letting off the gas. I have already replaced the vacumn modulator, changed filter and fluid, and now I'm open to any suggestions.

I was told yesterday by a long time transmission old timer that he has the same problem with a ranger and the temporary fix is to drive the vehicle at about 40mph then put it into park and then back into drive. I would accept any fix advice that is a bit more traditional before such an extreme act.
