Spool.

I just wanted some opinions on spools. I am picking up a 8.8 (I have to) soon, for several reasons.

1. I'm going bigger than my 33's
2. My 7.5 is showing signs of weakness
3. I need some sort of locker/posi/ls, this open crap is killing me.

Heres a cheap solution to a problem, spool. They are like 125 from 4wp, I dunno how much from summit, I haven't checked. But my truck is like 50/50 right now. It's still my DD, but my commute to work just got split by 1/8. I drive 2 miles to work and 4 to school, I'm not too worried about street handling.

I just basically want to hear opinions on spools. Are they OK to use for a DD/weekend toy? Will I have a risk of breaking an axle shaft? Will it eliminate my c-clips?

Overall, is it reccomended? I mean, I hear about em a lot, but not on road trucks, just on weekend warriors. LMK.

Also, gears will most likely be 5.13's, on 37" tires (I dunno what yet, either mt/r's, ssr's, or baja claws).

SuperGildo@RRP 09-12-2006 10:11 PM

i wouldnt run one on a hubless (lock type anyway) axle on the street. it will be hell on your tires and although you wont snap on the street, youll still fatigue the shafts.

Get a lock right or aussie locker, great price and theyre pretty good.

it wont eliminate your c-clips btw...

You talking about a mini-spool? They're hard on the driveline and not recommended for bigger tires much less street use. I just got done doing some research on them for sanity aside.

no mini spool uses a stock open carrier. they just get rid of the spiders...

full spool is like a carrier but instead of havent a space in the middle it just has the splined openings for shafts and the rest is just the ring gear...

go search for one, youll see what im talking about quickly...

mini spools are like 30-40 buicks anyway...

Ricky- I would just look for an 8.8 that has L/S. It would be less $$and less headache if you happened upon one that already had it.

never run a spool or a 100% solid locked rear diff on a daily driver you will go completely insane... my buddy had it on his 1978 f-150 for about 2 weeks thats all he could stand. its not fun trying to turn corners and having that one wheel sqeeling like a banshi everytime, plus makes it a PITA to drive in wet weather...

jrpro130 09-12-2006 11:19 PM

Yea, I just wanna get like a powertrax or something, maybe a detroit e locker...but they are SO dang expensive. It's upwards of 400 dollars for one, I thought I may just take it out the easy way.

Guess I'll just save for an e locker, tahts what I really want, I like it being controllable. I don't like the idea of the powertrax being locked when you are on the gas...

Who knows, maybe I"ll just stick with the factory LS

You get what you pay for....

Gearhead61 09-12-2006 11:37 PM

look at the Auburn ECTED if you want a selectable locker. N3ELZ has one and Rangerboy03FX4LVLII had one in his ranger. It's what I'd get if I was gonna drop that kinda money on my diff.

I've seen John's hard at work and I have to say that I was impressed. I too would look into an ECTED if I had the money to blow on a locker.

i have a lock right equivalent in my front and its worked BEAUTIFULLY off road. Although in the rear end as you say "you hit the gas and it locks up" is correct, its VERY controllable.you just have to adjust your driving style a little bit. L/S only has been driving me crazy lately in the rear. Ide change but im gonna just lock the 9 inch and save the money.

honestly, an aussie would give you everything you need and they are less than 300 and you can install it yourself easily...

I didn't know they were that cheap? I can do 300, I just don't wanna drop 500 on a locker...thats a bit much. The powertrax is 4 IIRC

SuperGildo@RRP 09-13-2006 12:04 PM

you can probably get an 8.8 aussie for around 250 if you search well enough and have peeps price match...

jrpro130 09-13-2006 12:37 PM

Sounds good! Thanks gil!

edit: do you have a link? all I can find is the ones for the d35 up front???

SuperGildo@RRP 09-13-2006 01:01 PM

you lokin for prices? i always check 4wp as a starting point on prices. summit should have em too....

SuperGildo@RRP 09-13-2006 01:01 PM

Naw man, I couldn't find em.

I did a search on yahoo. and 4wp, I got only fronts. if you could help me out, that would be awesome!

SuperGildo@RRP 09-17-2006 07:47 PM

i found the 28 spline lockright at summit.

search part number: PWT-1820-LR

I found the detroit ez locker at summit but only saw a 31 splin edition, and i cant find the genuine gear quick lok anywhere online, but i got mine for 260.

call a couple local 4wd stores to get a better quote on the genuine gear, which will probably be the cheapest. i also only saw the 31 spline aussie locker on aussie's site, but it was 240 bucks...

jrpro130 09-17-2006 08:06 PM

Awesome, I'm pretty set on the powertrax lock-rite or no slip. 350 for the lock right is AWESOME!

Thanks gil!!

SuperGildo@RRP 09-17-2006 08:11 PM

before you purchase the lock right MAKE SURE and call around on the quick lock. im almost positive it will be cheaper and i would be willing to be they have the 28 spline ones. those lockers are all VERY similar in design with probably the only difference being how the mount the springs in them...

SuperGildo@RRP 09-17-2006 08:13 PM

BTW i just found a genuine gear online for a 31 spline for 250, but there was a small gap in the part #s to the ford 9" part #s, so there might be a chance they have em...

got-dirty 09-17-2006 08:35 PM

the no slip is more than the loc-rite. about 100 bucks more. im personally putting a loc-rite in my 8.8 when i get the 5.13s. the front might get an arb, but will probably match it with the rear.

jrpro130 09-18-2006 06:18 AM

Sounds good, I still got a little time.
