Junkyard loves its 8.8's

I went to the junkyard today in search of an 8.8 explorer rearend for my truck. Well, I found one that I want. It is out of a 2000 or 2001 Explorer Sport, complete, disc to disc, all the cables and brake lines. 3.73 limited slip, good brakes. I asked the guy how much he wanted for it and I about fainted!!!!! 850 bux for an axle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For a couple hundred more I can get a DTS rearend that is built to the hilt!!! A buddy of mine bought a running 7.3 powerstroke from there for less than what he wants for this axle. I am gonna call him again on monday and see if his price changes. They say that he will have his good days and bad days. Hopefully I caught him on a bad day. Oh yeah, it only has 25K miles on it...I know because I did buy the overhead console and guage cluster out of it :)

Steal it, and tape 300 bucks to where it should be.

Ouch! Same thing happened to me...I went to the JY and there was 12 rangers there, assorted years/models. NONE had rear ends on em except for 1. It was a 99 4x4...8.8 with 3.73's open, the guy wanted 400 for it, and it had 100k miles on it. I laughed and walked out.

I haven't purchased an axle, but I have run into the same situation. I found it works best to say I want one little thing, then I go and grab a whole bunch of things and go to the desk, plunk down my cash and say "I'll give you ____ amount for all of this." 99% of the time they are cool with it.

man, I wish it was like that here.

They have a whole inventory list and every little thing is priced (well, not nuts and bolts, but pretty close).

Standard rear ends for rangers here are close to 500 with a decent milage (for an 8.8)

OHC's are 100-150 all day

Yeah, 1 ton axles are right around there. But not a compact suv/truck axle. I would have gone with it for 400 because it was in great condition. But I shall see on monday when I call them back.

Just picked up a carpet, F-150 dome light, XLT brakelight, and a Fog light switch for $80 today. Still waiting on the carpet to dry...I vacuumed it and pressure washed it. It's not spotless, but it'll get the job done. The vinyl might be easy to clean, but I don't like things sliding around all the time.

Yeah, I am gonna call again on monday and see if he will come down. If not, I will check other yards in the area. There are junkyards everywhere around here.

I got that 7.5 going on my truck, said I wanted 4.10 LS and he pushes some keys, and goes yeah I got one, pause and a moment of silence, (thought he would give a price, guess not) I ask how much, he goes 500, these are "rare". I said ok and walked out. I mean come on, just sitting there, I would have coughed up 300, but his price was so ridiculous and I have delt with him before I just left and said F*** it.

Well, I got ahold of him again and he said 500 for the axle and anything else that I want off of the explorer. Which I am gonna take. I will get the seats, wheels, steering wheel, stereo, and a few other things out of. I already got the OHC and guage cluster out of it though. I think I am gonna strip the dash out of it too lol
