Regear with 33's?

Hey y'all. I've had my 33"s for a few months now, and I'm kinda tired of a "meh" performance my truck has. I've got a K&N FIPK, a BamaChips tuner, and a magnaflow exhaust. I'll be putting in my e-fan soon as well. I've got the 4.0L too.

Should I regear? I'm concerned about a few things though:

1.) If I regear, whill my gas mileage drop like hell?
2.) What gears do I choose?
3.) Will I ever be able to drive on the highway without getting like 1 mpg?

Thanks guys.

-Dane

honistly 4.10 is the perfered gearing for 33's your next step is 4.56 which most people run with 35's and yes your MPG will drop... but your looking for performance and you have to sacrifice MPG

i was afraid of these things with 35s and 4.56s

highway mpg just gets worse after 75-80mph and that is with 35s.

your next choice is 4.56s from 4.10s there is nothing inbetween.

my mpg is arounf 16 most all the time but depending how i drive it can fluctuate(sp?).

I dont know what it would be like with 33s, i need to bolt some up and try it. so maybe im not much help

the power i have now isnt too far off from stock. it works great with my 35s.

Richmond makes a 4.33 for the Ford 8.8 with a 1.626" pinion and Motive Gear makes a 4.30 gear I'm not sure what our pinion size is but I found those gears in my summit mag.

4.10's.....you will not see a milage drop......i got 15 mpg with my 33's and 3.73's.....

what was your factory tire size?

i am assuming that it was 31's...here is the formula to figure new gears....

take the new tire size and divide the old tire size, then multiply the current gear ratio...

33/31*3.73=3.97......

since there is no 3.97 gear ratio you need a 4.10.....mine said i needed a 4.21 gear with the new 35's so i went with 4.56's....i actually am getting better fuel milage out of the 4.56's than i did when the truck was stock with 31's and 3.73 gears........you will not be upset with the 4.10's and 33's.......another thing to remember is that a 4x4 truck that is lifted will loose a bit because of the greater area that needs to be moved throught the air......

well if that is the case then 4.10s are perfect. most 4wd rangers 01+ have 4.10s better double check.

if you want some 4.10s i have some i will sell you cheap.

I am getting like 13-14 MPG with 35's and 4.88 gears. I freaking love it. The 4.88's are great. After driving this i wish 5.13's would have fit.

If you think at some point down the road you might go to 35's upgrade to the 4.56's now and enjoy the torque. If no way in the future you are going to 35's and it is your daily driver and you drive alot of highway I would say its up to you. You MPG would drop to the 13-15 range and at 70-80 MPH the motor is going to be truning some RPM's.

If you have 3.73 I would most deffiently upgrade. While you are re-gearing you might as well put 4.56's in now and because later down the road you might wish you did.

My truck is a dog now with my 33's, but they are alot heavier then your average 33. I hope to swap to 4:56's before winter.

Dang, I though interco tires run large!!!

My dads buddy has 33's on his jeep (ssr's) and they look WAY bigger than mine. Although I've never seen them up next to mine, they just look bigger

I never felt starved for power when I had my 33s. Hell, I could spin the tires in 2nd while rolling ~20mph if I punched it just right. That was with a 4.0, 4.10 gears, and a 5spd.
