94 Ranger XLT 5 speed stuck in 4th gear....

I have a 94 Ranger with the 2.3 and 5 speed that is stuck in 4th gear. I bought the truck new in 94 and it now has 305,800 trouble free miles until a couple of days ago when I tried to down shift out of 4th gear and I could NOT budge it. I limped it home but now need to get it repaired. The fluid has been regularly changed. I had the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and the flywheel resurfaced about 4 months ago with no problems until this. Everything else on the truck is all original. The clutch works i.e. it disengages when you press the peddle.

My questions are;
Should I rebuild the trans?
Find a used one at a salvage yard? If so, what years will interchange with my truck?

What else could cause it to stick in gear?

Need truck for work as I really don't want to keep riding my motorcycle in the rain.

Thanks in advance.

i would personally drop the trans and pull the top cover to see if there is any obvious damage.

i am a diesel truck mechanic, i do not know how similar these transmissions are to a big rig but i would imagine it should still have detent ***** and springs under the front cover to hold the shifter in the desired gear. it almost sounds like a spring has broken and jammed the shift rail

Thanks ranger. I'll try and tackle that in the AM. It's been a little had getting it into first gear when coming to a stop. All other shifts were normal.

no problem. is your truck 4x4? the transfer case and trans are not hard to take out at all. i just found when i did my clutch that the transfer case was siezed to the back of the trans. i took quite a while to remove without damaging anything else

It's a two wheel drive. Been a GREAT truck. I can't complain. It starts every time and still gets 23 mpg.

you shouldnt have too much trouble removing the trans then. now is a good time for a drain and fill, makes it a lot lighter to pull out but i have done mine full and empty so i know it can be done

Yeah, easier to fill through the shifter opening. I hope it is not terminal.

I removed the shifter just to have a look. As soon as I removed the shift ball ( what the long shifter bolts to) I was able to move the shift linkage out of fourth gear with a screwdriver with minimal effort. I examined the two pins and one of the was very loose and was partially out. The end was partially chewed up on one and the other was loose but in place.

Could the pin that slid out cause the shifter ball to turn enough to cause it to stick in gear? I replaced the chewed up pin, put it all back together and test drove it. It shifted normally.

Coincidence??

What year Ranger transmissions will interchange with my 99 2wd? I'm going on a search at the local Pull A Part tomorrow and was wondering what else will fit my 94.
