Syncros going out or clutch going out???
 

I have a problem with my truck, but im not quite sure what it is. Im mild novice when it comes to automotive repair. I have a 1993 4.0L manual. When im idaling, I can hear a sound that comes from underneath the cab that sounds like something is off balance or rubbing. It almost sounds like my engine is running rough or unbalanced, but its comming from under the cab somewhere. Its kinda hard to explain. When i push in the clutch, the sound stops. It is also hard to put my truck into gear and change gears. I have had people tell me that my syncros (spelling) are going out and that i should either get new syncros or get a new transmission. What do you guys think is wrong with my truck... are my syncros going out or do i just need a new clutch??

Possibly your clutch cable loosening. All those years, its gained some streched slack.

My car was doing the same, untill i got my steeda clutch quadrant, and adjustable clutch cable.

Your firewall quadrant stock should be somewhat adjustable, you would have to pull the clutch towards you, and move the quadrant the oposing direction.

If the firewall quadrant is fine.

Its your clutch cable giving way. Im sure its stretched out over the years.


Im 80% sure its your clutch cable.

If your having trouble in EVERY gear, it wont be the syncro's.

A clutch would just give out, after all the gear scratching.

thats funny, he doesn't have a clutch cable, its a ranger!

sounds to me like either the input shaft bearings or (doughtfull) the throwout bearing

how high off the floor does the clutch start to engauge or start to move the truck?
it should engauge about one inch off the floor. its its higher then that and you have high mileage its probley time for a clutch.

Sounds like a pilot bearing to me...the noise that is.
