tell me about the pumps in auto transmissions
leaning in the direction of the pump/pumps going out in my auto. What do I need to know about them? Availability, price, difficulty in replacing, etc. Anyone done this and what were your symptoms.
|
its not to bad once you get the trans out and the torque converter out.
im leaning more towards the torque converter being bad though. |
If the pump is going bad, dont waste your time replacing it. Get a new tranny. The problem with auto trannys is that when something fails or begins to fail, it shares all of the metal chunks with everything else in your tranny... You will be better off replacing it.

heres from my other thread:
"As I have been churning all this stuff over in my brain I put 2 things together that I already knew....but completed a bigger picture. I am now thinking that its the pump itself or a pressure related problem. First...as I understand it there are more than one band set for the gears...but would not expect all of them to go at once....and so fast when it worked fine and smooth up to that point. Second...this transmission leaks...and leaks bad. Since I bought it. I actually had to make a deflector out of aluminum to keep it off the exhaust because it was smoking so bad.....but guess what. At the point in time that it slipped to the point of no longer going the puddle of fluid under the truck is gone..in fact it was surprisingly not leaving anything under the truck from where I pulled in when it broke down." how do you test a torque converter to determine its the thing that failed? |
1 Attachment(s)
heres what the pump looks like, its part of the bellhousing. on the left.
Attachment 206795 your probley gonna need at least a "soft" rebuild kit. |
I will be doing an inspection while in there and replacing seals and gaskets. Have some leaks that I would like to address too. By soft rebuild kit, is that what you are meaning? Went to autozone yesterday and they dont list any rebuild stuff. Is this dealer only?

trans parts suplyers or try google for kits.
i can get a "fleet" kit from a local trans parts suplyer, its very heavy duty. they do not sell to the public but i know the owner personaly. soft kits are all the clutches and bands, seals and gaskets. |
thats an idea. I know a few around town. Will have to get on the phone monday.
