Torsen is better than trac lok...no clutch packs to wear away and replace...

If you don't wanna do that though see if you can get an open carrier on ebay and throw an aussie in there, assuming the gearset isnt ruined. I'd give you my old carrier that the e-locker replaced but its only 28-spline.

Setting up new gears and what not is not an easy task though, I really wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you really know what you're doing. Replacing the entire axle with an explorer one would be the easiest and cheapest option IMO. If you can find one with the right gear ratio.
i agree!

dont NEED an inch pound torque wrench.. really don't need any torque wrenches actually I dont think a single one touched my front axle. it helps knowing an impact though, too much or too little will fawk you big time.

It helps yes, completely and utterly necessary? no. but you can rent one from autozone. 1/2" atleast

If you were in austin i have most of the tools, and know people who know what their doing more so than me. The local 4x4 shop i used to take my junk to charges $500 to setup a R&P.

i also agree, no need for many of those tools, i have never used any of them and my gears are fine.

Freakin a. Knock on wood, hope this doesnt happen to mean! I've got this same axle in my 01, out of an 02 FX4, though I'm swapping it to my 98 before I sell my 01.

Mine did!

Grant, I had close to 30K on my trac loc before I sold the truck, and it was still as tight as the day I installed it. Hell, i have a brand new Aussie sitting here that was supposed to go into the Ranger when the clutch packs wore on the trac loc and... well it never happened.

my05edge, seriously, people call me crazy around here, but in talking to my buddy larry who is a GM drivetrain tech, he said that the old Camaro's and Forebirds had the torsen, and everything he's seen with torsen is crap. Whats stopping the newer torsen from doing the same? I'm just throwing that out. How many decades has the trac loc been around? And how many Ford vehicles have the trac loc? Sorry, I'm just really really really skeptical of the helical style L/S. Too many variables that could happen in em

You're not an Fx4 and you don't have a Torsen differential or 31spline axle...

I have almost 100,000 miles on my Torsen with no problems. I use it off-road too and it has seen some rough stuff. I did get the recall replacement upgrade so it should be stronger than the original.

I broke the carrier on my 89 STX Supercab with the Ford limited slip. So, the clutch pack limited slip is not bullet proof either.

You need an expo axle or an FX4 LII axle for the 31 spline to his carrier to work.
