Touchy 4 wheel drive

Hey guys... im having issues with the 4 wheel drive on my truck. My trucks a 98, with the 3 slow and manual. It takes forever for my truck to switch into 4 wheel drive at times, i can hear it click, sometimes 3 or 4 times before it finally switches over. That i've gotten used to, what i haven't is what happened yesterday. I went to switch it into 4 wheel drive and it decided it didn't want to come on, silence no response after turning on the switch than the 4 hi and 4 lo lights flashed 5 times. I had no 4 wheel drive the rest of the day. Today, i go out, get in the truck, and figure what the hell i'll see if my 4 wheel drive works... sure as i flip the switch it does its normal 3 or 4 clicks and turns on. My question is... anyone have any ideas on why it takes so long to switch over, and any thoughts on why it worked... than didn't work yesterday... than worked today? Its nice having the 4 wheel drive in the snow... as long as it works lol

you might need a new T-Case motor. The travel bushing gets worn out and crushed.

Oh god i hope thats not it lol those things tend to be pricey... i guess i could always check my salvage yard resources lol I don't know if the fluid has ever been changed... the guy that owned before me took it in to get looked at before i bought it from him and said everything checked out good (which could be a lie lol) I'll check the fluid... than go from there. Any other ideas?

It could also be the solenoid for the t-case motor. Unfortunately I have no idea of how to diagnose that.

Im gunna check the fluid in the transfer case.. 172k miles it might not have ever been changed. If its the transfer case motor, i can get one used for 30 bucks with a warranty, which i didn't think was a bad deal lol This just adds to the fact my stupid check engine light is back on, after it was on because of the egr valve. This time its a long list of things it could be... im excited lol

Thanks guys!
